The beginning

From the idea to the first steps

Let’s get back to the spring of 2006. Mihaly Vlaszak, the general manager of Mertalloglobus Femonto Kft. is suffering from insomnia, and thinking whole night how to build a better reputation to his firm by a great achivment that should be related to his firm, but much more different form the core activities. As he has been keen on toys of old times and the manners of that ages. Thus, here comes the obvious idea : let’s build the biggest tinsoldier ever.

Many could fail at this point but in this case the project was not stopped here. During a research it was found that the current recordholder solder takes place in New Westminster, BC. It also appered in the actual edition of Guinness Book of Records. The soldier is formed and painted after Andersen’s tale. So target is given, but there’s nobody to help achieve it.

The best method to complete unusual project is the unusual way. By investing money from a budget without limit everyone is able to do but it is more fun to build a community and share the joy and success and the achivement is realised through the efforts of many who are ready to do their best for the common purpose.

As Mr. Vlaszak’s company is a remarkable player on the Hungarian metal market there was a huge source for potential partners. During a normal talk to an old consumer Mr. Janos Vas who casts presents of different metals the idea was mentioned. He loved this idea, and after he arrived back to his hometown Dunaujvaros he started to talk about the project the sculpturer and local highschool teacher Istvan ROHO Rohonczi. He just said : ” It’s so a crazy idea that must be done”.

So they three begin the project by organising a new company, Olomkatona Ltd., that supervises the operations. And new supporters also appear on the horizon. The question as in case of every great initiative is : ”Who’s gonna finance it?”. The first option to gain money to sell numbered miniatures about the soldier asuring place for advertisment opportunity. But at this point came a new expection of the owners : not the fast financial benefits shall be the main motivation than the belief of the power that converges a community together, the trust and th voluntary as it could be seen in the credo of the project.

To build something big, you have to have a plan and design. Because the rival is following the tale of Andersen the builders decided to find a traditional Hungarian sample. So they chose the famous Hungarian cavalary unit, the Hussars. For first a one-meter tall miniature was finalized in the end of the summer 2006.

Engineer challenges

The weight and the dimensions cause to use new building-technology. According to ROHO the biggest challenge of the project is to shape the casting moulds. The quality and the accuracity of these moulds could be the key-point of the 11-meter-tall hussar. By shaping the sculpturer also will face how giant the soldier is. No one has done this kind of project before so every technology and application must be found out. The sample of the big hussar will be a 2 meters tall miniature.

In the second phase comes the shaping from gypsum. According to the current expectations the Hussar will stand on an iron ”skeleton” and the body will be filled by concrete. Thin lead sheets and casted form will play the role of the skin and the cloth. Where more details are needed unique shaped casted parts will be used.

Casted Hussar

2007 came with a freezing January. The soldier arrived in his new station the foundry of caster Laszlo Poos in fall 2006 and scheduelled his first mission. He will be introduced to the public and the press in March, and he has to be handsome and metal shiny for the event. So he spent these month in a workshop of the former Kispest Textile Company where he got his metal form. The gypsum shape was cut into parts, formed from sand, casted with hot metal and sticked and fixed together.

On 13rd March 2007 the participants introduced him to the press in Dunaujvaros. The first miniatures were also given to the first supporters. Although the press-conference was not a big boom that changes the world but started a constructive discussion about the final place of the soldier.

The city of Pecs applied for this place first as they will host the programs of the European Capital of Culture events in 2010. Local men from Dunaujvaros also offered their town as a potential HQ for the Hussar . But these applications were only suggestions for us. We are still waiting for applicants and nominees where „Miska Hussar” would be welcomed and highly appritiated by the community. For the May 2007 a 2-meter-tall was ready to be introduced for the public. Although its role is be a modell for the Big Soldier and supply the know-how for the sculpturer, an average man seems just a minor near him.

Meanwhile the fame of the Hussar arrived in Komarom, where the famous Fort Monostor showed interest with the hope of a co-operation. Fort Monostor was the last fortress of Hungarian Army during the revolution of 1848/49 and after the capitulation of Világos in August, under the lead of Gen. György Klapka Komarom managed to resist until October and was able to force special peace conditions with the Austrian forces.

Thanks to the business relations of Metalloglobus, in Eurpoe and even on the other side of the World, in Indonesia people also heard about this attempt. And we were keep on working on the big hussar...
